Friday Night Reads: Ella Shawn

This Friday I'll be hosting my twelfth #FriNightReads starting at 7p MT on my author Facebook featuring Ella Shawn's Âmes Brisées: Broken Souls. It's a dark romance between two lost souls searching for understanding through a shared relational language they both speak... fluently.

How did you first start writing?

I was an English major in college with a concentration in writing. Although I planned to go into advertising as a copywriter, I took one too many creative writing classes and fell in love with it. I never went into advertising but went on to become a high school English teacher who happened to teach creative writing as an elective. Teaching that class reignited my love of writing and I started playing around with my craft again. In 2014, I retired early from teaching after being diagnosed with lupus and thought… well, I’m not doing anything else, may as well try my hand at my first love. It’s been slow going and also the most fulfilling act I’ve ever undertaken.

Why do you love it?

I love writing erotic romance for many reasons, the biggest one is that this genre allows for the exploration of the deeper, darker aspects of humanity. I’m interested in what makes us behave and respond the way we do when one of all of the basic animal instincts are repressed or liberated. I enjoy the opportunity to immerse myself in the lives of people who only exist in my mind and then to be able to write them so well they become real and important to those who read about them. I love showing people the truth of human nature wrapped in the safety of fiction; all the while, causing readers to examine themselves and the world in which they live.

More on Ella Shawn:

Ella Shawn is a contemporary women's fiction writer with a fondness for complex characters and happily-ever-afters. She also produces a podcast aptly named, 2500 Words or Less where she shares one chapter per episode of work in progress and invites her listening audience to call in with feedback. And because she's a mommy of three beautiful teenage daughters, she writes for a mommy blog once a month. If she's not writing, podcasting, or blogging; then you can probably find her sitting in her favorite chair with a ball of yarn, her wooden crochet hooks making something

bohemian-inspired for her Etsy shop, Browns-n-Barnacles PCD.
